Online Classes – Getting Started

How Do I Get Started In Online Classes?

Get Enrolled (Admissions, Financial Aid/Payment Plan)

Admission procedures for Online students are the same as for traditional classroom students. Follow the steps to Get Enrolled by applying for admissions and submitting test score(s) and transcript(s). The Enrollment Checklist will provide additional, useful information.

Online Classes Orientation – Determine if online classes are right for you.

This online orientation will discuss policies and procedures of online classes as well as prepare you for using Canvas, the website where classes are hosted, and gauge your readiness to be successful in an online class. Short surveys will be administered in each class based on information found in this material.

Advising & Registration

Ӱ students must see a Ӱ advisor to register for their first semester of courses. After that term, the student may web register for their classes through MyӰ.

It is important to note that students must register for a course AFTER that course is added to the student’s plan. Adding a course to the plan does NOT register you for the course. Please be sure to complete the registration process.

Online students may request advising for online classes at the link below. The link will close 48 hours prior to the end of registration to allow all students to be properly registered in time for the start of classes. Once the link has closed students can visit a campus location to receive advising. The Request for Online Class Advising is for students wishing to register for online classes. Please make sure that you have completed Steps 1 and 2 before completing the request.

Accessing Canvas

Students should begin logging into their course shells on the first day of scheduled classes. Attendance will be counted the first week so be sure to complete all work assigned. Links to Canvas can be found at the top of each page on the Ӱ website or you can access it directly at .

Enrolling in Classes From another College

Students can request classes from any college in the MSVCC consortium, however there are some requirements that must be met. First, the course must be listed in the Ӱ current catalog with the same number of credit hours. Second, the instructor must be approved by Ӱ faculty credential standards. Third, the course must be approved by a faculty member at Ӱ to ensure that it meets the same standards as the class taught at Ӱ. This process can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks depending on different issues. To submit a request for an outside course please speak to an advisor.

No outside course requests can be taken the last two weeks of registration in order to properly prepare outside course needs for our students. Ӱ sections of any given course are filled before we allow courses from the other colleges to be “pulled in” for registration.

Proctored Testing Policy

All online courses taught by Ӱ are required to have at least two proctored exams. A proctored exam is scheduled with a “proctor” in a secure testing environment. The proctor will receive a password that will allow the student to test for their scheduled course. Please see your course schedule for when to schedule these tests. It is highly recommended that you schedule all of your appointments at the start of each semester. Information on how to schedule a proctored exam at Ӱ can be found .

Testing Location Other Than Mississippi Community Colleges

Students who will not be testing at any of the community colleges in the state of Mississippi will need to contact the Distance Learning office to setup a testing site. The student will need to do this at the start of every term; the approval process takes about a week. Please do not wait until a few days before the exam ends to do this. It is the student’s responsibility to locate a testing site. Libraries will not be approved.

Once the student has located a testing site, they will need to send the following information to: RYProctor@hindscc.edu.

  1. Name of testing site.
  2. Name, email address, phone and fax number of the proctor.
  3. The student must also provide their name, ID number, phone number, and course/test information in the email.

Students enrolled in any MSVCC online course can test at any Mississippi community college proctored testing center in the state for free and without approval. Students enrolled in Ӱ courses do NOT have to test at Ӱ. However, all six Ӱ campuses have a proctored testing center for your convenience.

Students who take their proctored exams at an approved site other than one of the fifteen community colleges in the state of Mississippi or a virtual proctored test may be charged a fee. Students are responsible for paying all fees for testing at that location or virtually.

Now I’m registered, What do I do?

When you registered, you should have received a Student Guide giving you basic instructions for accessing the site and getting to your classes. If not, this is available on the Online Classes Orientation. It is very important that you login to your courses and complete the check-in assignment during the first two days of class to prevent being dropped for non-attendance.

It is required that you use your Ӱ email address for all communications with Online instructors and staff.
